Harvard Law Clinic’s Petition to Suspend Harmful Rodenticides

In May of 2024, the Harvard Law School Animal Law Clinic submitted a petition to the Pesticide Board Subcommittee, which falls under the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, (MDAR). MDAR has the authority to suspend the registrations of anticoagulant rodenticide products for use by pest control companies. The petition prepared by the Harvard Law School Animal Law Clinic was submitted on behalf of a coalition of wildlife activists and rehabilitators. The committee voted to conduct a “scientific review” by a third party. They have hired Eastern Research Group, Inc (ERG) to conduct the “scientific review”. The ERG review is organized in three phases. Phase One is the first of two which will outline the approach ERG will take and identifies all resources to consider for the scientific review. This includes listing out stakeholder groups, literature/research and other information that will be reviewed. ERG has the Anti-Coagulant Rodenticides Scientific Review – Draft Phase 1 Report.

Harvard Law Clinic is expecting open comments from the community sometime in July. Taryn LaScola, Taryn.lascola@mass.gov is the contact person. Please watch for a call to action when we have more details.

Please see the Harvard Law School Animal Clinic petition for further details.

WA18 passed with astounding support!

Thank you to all of you who were helpful and supportive in our quest to get WA18 passed. Warrant Article 18, Home Rule Petition passed 232 yes, 7 no and 4 abstained. This is great news! The bill will now go to the state house for consideration.

Next steps will be to strategize how to support this article through the State Legislative Process. In addition, we need to plan for community education and empowerment to get people to voluntarily choose to limit SGAR use on their property even before we have laws to restrict its use.
